Canberra’s best cheese and wine bars

Posted on

If there’s a better combo than cheese and wine, we don’t want to hear it.

Whether it’s consumed shared or solo, pre or post-dinner (or as the main course), put together with minimal effort or with the finest intricacies; it just works. It can do no wrong. It’s the Beyonce of snacks, if you will.

If you’re looking for somewhere to get your cheddar, brie or blue fix with a good drop, Canberra has plenty of offerings to choose from. We narrow down the best places for cheese and wine.

“Vostead is known for its New York jazz bar stylings, complex cocktails and extensive whiskey list,” says our resident cheese queen, Emma Macdonald.

“But it is also getting something of a following for its Charcuterie Board. The Board features three rotational cheeses—currently it’s an Adelaide Hills Triple Cream Brie, Asiago from Northeastern Italy, and a British Aged Red Leicester. Then there is prosciutto, Italian salami, quince paste, Sicilian olives and Three Mills Bakery Sourdough. It’s quite a substantial offering kept simple by only using the good stuff and, according to bar owner Stu, no trimmings that just end up in the bin anyway.”

Given its deep Italian roots, cheese is a given at Amici Bar. Their signature “boozy brunch,” complete with bottomless mimosas, includes a selection of delectable cheese and charcuterie platters to share (along with the option to add on a wheel of baked brie.)

They also have an excellent selection of platters on offer throughout the rest of the day: think triple cream brie, soft goat’s cheese or light and smooth blue, paired with the finest of meats.

Stepping into Brunello is like being transported to the great wine bars of Europe, where you are invited to sit back and go slow over good conversation. At the restaurant’s heart, is fine wine. So much so that “at least a third of the airy restaurant is given to walls of wine,” says Emma.

“An Enomatic Wine Dispenser allows diners to sample some of the finest wines in the world.” And of course, you’ll find a good platter, with the option to pick your cheese from a special walk-in glass charcuterie and cheese room. Now that’s dedication.

Alongside the Canberra District’s best new vintage and cellared Rieslings, you can find a delectable cheese plate to tantalise the tastebuds, including fruit, pickles, pate and bread.
